If you only catch a quick glimpse, all spiders may look alike. However, some spiders are harmless and can help keep your home pest-free, so it’s important to identify the good ones from the bad ones. Brown recluse spiders are a brown to yellowish color with a body about the size of a quarter to a half-dollar and have long slender legs. Their most distinguishing feature is the dark violin-shaped marking on the front portion of their back, though this may not always be visible. Brown recluses are most often seen in spring during their mating season and are nocturnal, like many other types of pests.
Wolf spiders are similar to brown recluses but lack the violin shape on their backs. Wolf spiders are larger and have noticeable hair on their bodies, whereas brown recluses do not. Despite their sometimes intimidating size, wolf spiders are not a threat to humans and should be left alone if found outdoors unless you have small pets, as wolf spider venom can be fatal to them.
True to their name, brown recluse spiders are shy and prefer to live in areas without much activity. A brown recluse infestation is often only noticeable when someone accidentally stumbles upon one, usually in out-of-the-way corners, under boxes, or in debris. Because they’re shy and usually only come out at night, you may not be aware they’ve even infiltrated your home. However, just because you can’t see them, doesn’t mean they’re not there. In fact, brown recluses can be prolific breeders, laying up to 5 egg sacs at once with as many as 50 eggs in each one. These spiders usually don’t huddle in one nest but instead spread out throughout your home so they can continue breeding and hunting. If you notice any of the following signs, you may be dealing with a brown recluse spider infestation.
