What Are Drywood Termites?

Like all termites, drywood termites rely on the sustenance and shelter of wood to survive. However, drywood termites do not require a source of water to thrive. Instead, they get all of their hydration from consuming wood, which means they usually infest dry wood above ground level. Drywood termites live and burrow through undecayed wood, creating elaborate tunnels within the wood. Once drywood termites have infiltrated your home, it can be only a matter of days before they reproduce to infestation levels.

Signs Of Drywood Termites

While it’s important to remain vigilant during termite season, often March through July, different species of drywood termites can be active year round. • Termite wings. Swarmers, or termites with wings, are required for the colony to reproduce. You may see these flying termites around dusk or you may only notice their small wings around baseboards or other areas of your home. However, it’s important to be able to tell the difference between termites and flying ants.
• Seeing “white ants”. Beyond flying ants, you may also confuse grounded termites with ants. However, termites have lighter-colored bodies with straight antennae and thicker midsections.
• Termite droppings. If you don’t notice their iridescent wings or the termites themselves, you may notice their droppings. Look for dark powdery build-ups around window sills, floors, and other areas of your home.
• Clicking sounds. Termites may be small, but they can make quite the racket if you’re listening for it. If you’ve noticed any other signs, press your ear to the wall and listen for their unique clicking sounds. They’re more active from the evening into the night, so you may have more luck hearing them during these hours.
• Hollow-sounding wood. In addition to hearing the sounds listed above, you may be able to hear the results of their work. If the wood is hollow when you tap on it, it’s likely termites are to blame.
