Subterranean Termites
These are commonly referred to as ground termites. Similar to ants, these troublemakers burrow underground and live in large colonies. Of all American termites, these guys are considered the most destructive of the species. Like subterranean termites, Formosan termites also burrow deep into the ground and attack the wood from their nests directly by forming mud tubes. Arriving at the United States from Asia, they are thought to have been spread across the nation by the wooden slats used in the production of the early railway systems. These termites are found in California, New Mexico, and several southern states.
