If you suspect the presence of termites in your yard, there is a good chance it is a subterranean termite. Subterranean termites are typically found underground. These wood-eating insects have a thin cuticle, requiring moist environments to thrive. As such, subterranean termites will succumb to dehydration without sufficient moisture. This is one of the primary reasons subterranean termites create mud tubes. Mud tubes are narrow tunnels made from a mixture of mud, saliva, wood, debris, and termite feces. These towering formations conserve moisture and protect the termite colony as they forage for food.
Closely examine your front and backyard for these mud tubes. Pay close attention to areas near rotting or decaying wood, stumps, dead trees, untreated wood, and moist soil. Although not as common, another tell-tale sign of termites are discarded wings. Termite swarmers shed their small wings after mating. Inspect your wooden window sills thoroughly for these translucent little wings.
Preventative termite control can help shield your home from a potential infestation. By proactively practicing smart gardening and landscaping practices, you can significantly reduce your chances of experiencing extensive termite damage.
When gardening outdoors, we recommend keeping raised garden beds and shrubbery a few feet away from the home. Vegetation that makes contact with the foundation of your home can provide a convenient access point for unwanted pests – including termites. As such, it is best to create some distance between your foliage and your home.
If possible, try to keep your bushes, grass, and trees regularly trimmed. In some cases, it may also be wise to check your home for unsealed cracks or gaps. These tiny holes can allow termites to make their way from your yard and into your walls, ceilings, and floors. Caulk or weatherstripping are effective solutions for any cracks you may find.
